Administrative Management Group (AMG) - How to Advance Your Career
Date: Tuesday, October 11, 2011
Time: 12:00 noon - 1:30 pm
Location: James West Alumni Center - Conference Room
Do you have career goals, but don't know how to achieve them? Do you feel
you have skills to be successful, but haven't realized your plans? This
session will provide you access to people who have recently been in your
position and taken the next step or who can help guide you to take the next
step. Participants will have the chance to attend two of the four concurrent
sessions.
Session #1 - Moving up from your position as an Assistant. Learn from staff
at UCLA who have done this and are here to share the benefit of their
experiences with you.
Session #2 - Interviews, Cover Letters, and Resumes. Learn from a HR
recruiter working at UCLA Campus Human Resources what gets screened out and
what makes it through to the units. Then hear from people working in the
departments about what they look for when selecting applicants to interview.
Session #3 - Mentoring and Networking. Hear from people who have been
mentored and have mentored others. Learn what the difference is between
"networking" and building an effective network of relationships.
Session #4 - Work / Life Balance. You have a career and a family. You want
to advance in your career and still be there for your family. Talk with
others that are successfully working through this balance.

CPO Food Closet
For students who are facing economic difficulty, they may find themselves
forced to decide on a daily basis whether to skip breakfast or lunch so they
can afford books and other supplies. The Food Closet can be critical in
filling the gap for these students. If you have an opportunity to pick up
any small item and drop it off at one of the sites shown below, please take
the time to do so. Clearly, we are all facing our own financial challenges,
but current indicators are that there will be a need for this service for an
indefinite period, so any support that can be provided will certainly be
felt close to home. [NOTE: for anyone who may wish to make a monetary
donation, please see information below.]
SUGGESTED ITEMS:
. Items that are especially useful - Microwavable food options such
as Mac and cheese, soups, cereals, various "add water and heat" meals
. Snack bars, juice boxes, p-nut butter and crackers, chips,
cookies, etc. PLEASE NOTE that large sizes of these items are not as useful
as sizes that can be carried easily.
. Canned goods - vegetables, chili, soups, canned meats, etc. (in
the 16 oz. range) can be very helpful for weekends when the Closet is
closed. Students can take these home and use them for meals.
. toiletries
For departments close to CPO, the department has a refrigerator with a small
freezer. Microwavable frozen dinners can be very helpful as long as there
is room for them, and refrigerated food items like fruits, vegetables, milk,
juice, etc. are good as long as the department can pass them along to the
students fairly quickly.
Drop-off sites for items are:
1) Student Activities Center (105 or 106)
2) The Office of the Registrar, 1105 Murphy Hall
3) Wilshire Center, Suite 600
MONETARY DONATIONS: Checks can be made out to the UCLA Foundation and sent
to the Community Programs Office where any contributions will be used to
purchase items for the pantry.
Checks can be mailed to:
