Sep. 18--A federal judge has denied Southwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary's motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a female former professor.
Sheri Klouda says she lost her tenure-track job at the Fort Worth school
because of her gender. U.S. District Judge John McBryde ruled Friday
that her suit against the seminary and its president, Paige Patterson,
can go forward. No trial date has been set. Seminary officials would not
comment on the judge's ruling. The seminary's lawyers made a number of
arguments, including church-state separation. "I don't think they left
anything out in their efforts to try to get the case dismissed," said
Gary Richardson, a lawyer for Dr. Klouda. Dr. Klouda taught biblical
Hebrew at Southwestern -- her graduate school alma mater -- from 2000
until last year.
Her suit alleges breach of contract, fraud and defamation, and asks for
damages. The suit says that though she was on track for tenure beginning
in 2002, she was dismissed because a new Southwestern administration led
by Dr. Patterson interprets Scripture as forbidding women to teach male
pastors-in-training in courses deemed theolo ical.
