Dear ReligionLaw readers,
In the last few months, I've made a few submissions to this list about new
cases I've added to my webpage at _http://www.ACLUFightsForChristians.com_
(http://www.ACLUFightsForChristians.com) . As I explain on that page, the reason
I created that list of cases was to counteract A LOT of misinformation about
the ACLU on the internet. I happened to see a lot of this misinformation
because I used to help moderate the ACLU message boards. I saw a lot of ACLU
myths like the ones at:
_http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_aclu_marines_praying.htm_
(http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_aclu_marines_praying.htm)
and
_http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/cemetery.asp_
(http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/cemetery.asp)
Unfortunately, I also saw last month that Jay Sekulow of the ACLJ added to
the misinformation in his article at:
_http://www.townhall.com/columnists/JaySekulow/2006/11/28/the_aclu_targets_chr
istians_
(http://www.townhall.com/columnists/JaySekulow/2006/11/28/the_aclu_targets_christians)
(not only does the title of Jay Sekulow's article add to the misinformation,
that article includes a claim that the ACLU has a "never-ending quest to
completely eradicate all things religious from public life.")
I've never understood why people who should know better still frame a
disagreement about the meaning of the Establishment Clause as something like
"targeting Christians." Or, really, I'm afraid I DO understand.
Anyway, back when I helped moderate the ACLU message boards, I would often
get asked to "name one case where the ACLU represented a Christian." Now I
have dozens of such cases and the LATEST CASE from THIS WEEK is at:
_http://www.mauinews.com/story.aspx?id=26128_
(http://www.mauinews.com/story.aspx?id=26128)
In brief, the ACLU of Hawaii got a county government building to include a
Christmas tree with an extant Menorah display so as to avoid the appearance of
endorsement.
I even created a 2 minute 31 second YOUTUBE VIDEO on the subject at:
_http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n7dAUnSBFg_
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n7dAUnSBFg)
I hope you find this submission informative.
And, I hope you all have a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, a relaxing
time off, or whatever the case may be.
Sincerely,
Allen Asch
