Subject: Re: Church state separation & parking meters

Brad Jacob will be glad to know that he has reached a point of agreement
with Americans United for Separation of Church and State on the "de minimis
non curat lex" aspects of this case. Here's a very brief snippet from the
LA Times story:
"Harry Schwartzbart of the Americans United for Separation of Church and
State said he considers the free Sunday parking to be a trivial issue,
especially when measured against items such as President Bush's faith-based
initiative.

"'I'm sure my organization would not spend one nickel debating this issue in
court,' Schwartzbart said. 'You're splitting hairs.'"

In any event, the case seems pretty clearly to be an example of the grand
old beach-town tradition of extending advantages to locals over non-locals;
the church aspect of the case seems pretty secondary.
