Boy Scouts Protected in Education Bill

No, unlike David Guinn, I don't equate the Boy Scouts
with the KKK, White Supremacists, and Al Queda. The
reason it was so important for Congress to act to
protect the Boy Scouts is exactly this kind of animus
some people feel for an organization that is not evil
like the KKK, but quite the contrary is one of the
best organizations for boys to ever exist. And one of
the things that make the Boy Scouts great is their
goal of teaching young boys about sexual morality,
about becoming good husbands of wives and good
fathers.

The whole notion of whether we should tolerate the
intolerant is silly. The real issue is whether we
should tolerate evil organizations. BSA is a wonderful
organization, not an evil one like the KKK.

To tie this to the topic of this list, religion and
government, I actually wrote an article demonstrating
that so-called proponents of tolerance and gay rights
were actually involved in an attempt not only to
normalize homosexuality but to demonize and
marginalize traditional religions. See Duncan,
Homosexual Marriage and the Myth of Tolerance: Is
Cardinal O'Connor a 'Homophobe'?, 10 Notre Dame J.
Law, Ethics & Pub. Policy 587 (1996).

For example, Prof. Larry Yackle wrote an article
predicting the triumph of the gay rights legal agenda
and said that once gay rights are the law the "old
order" will be crushed and driven from respectable
society. "Private homophobia", exclaimed Yackle,
"deprived of legal sanction, will ultimately be
discredited and forced to the margin." What is
"private homophobia?" It is wonderful religions like
the Catholic Church and conservative Christianity. It
is wonderful youth organizations, like BSA, that
endorse traditional sexual morality. These wonderful
organizations are to be given labels like "homophobic"
and "fundamentalist" and are to be demonized (compared
to the KKK and Al Queda) and marginalized and driven
from respectable society (e.g. excluded from public
school facilities and even public parks).

Congress knew this and understood it was wrong. The
Boy Scouts ain't the KKK, they are a wonderful
organization where boys learn how to be good men.
Cardinal O'Connor was not an evil "homophobe," he was
a kind and compassionate man of God.

Anyone who confuses BSA with the KKK has a serious
problem with his or her moral compass.

Cheers, Rick Duncan
