Religion as beneficial to the public welfare

I actually agree with Jim Henderson and think I'm at fault for not putting "interesting" in quotation marks. As we both note, there is no consensus as to whether religion in general is beneficial or whether any particular religion is beneficial.

Perhaps this thread is straying a bit, and perhaps I should refrain, but is
it fair to include within the "divisiveness of religion" category of
arguments the festivities that Mark Graber has in mind: "I would suspect,
for example, we might have an interesting a difficult debate in this list
were we to evaluate whether various religions have overall been good things
or bad things." It seems to this battle-scarred veteran that our debate
would provide little evidence regarding religions and their inflammatory
tendencies (assuming that was where Mark was headed), while providing lots
of insight into the inflammatory tendencies of the utterly human individuals
who do, or do not, believe.
