NYC schools close for Rosh Hashanah &Yom Kippur and also for the week of
Easter and Passover, making sure to close in the direction (before or after
Easter) that encompasses at least the first two days of Passover and also
Good Friday. There are a significant number of Jewish teachers in the NYC
school system-certainly more than the number of substitutes that could be
hired for the important Jewish holidays. One of the issues with Jewish
holidays which is not nercesarily true about other religious holidays, is
that it is forbidden to work on many of Jewish holidays-its not just a matter
of stopping at the temple for a service and going into work late.
