Andy Koppelman's proposal for a domestic partnership plan that would provide
at least some benefits for domestic partners (defined as any two related or
unrelated adults living together who are not legally eligible to marry)
addresses some of my concerns about the symbolic and educative effects of
domestic partnership laws. As the Czar of the Pariah Class of citizens (
i.e. those who believe in traditional moral or religious values), I hereby
submit the following compromise package for consideration by Czar Andy and
Czar Michael. This package has four points, all of which are conditions to
the plan becoming operative and continuing in force:
1)The domestic partnership plan for two persons ineligible to wed one
another (i.e. Andy's proposal).
2)Repeal of all laws prohibiting private discrimination on the basis of
marital status and/or sexual orientation (this is necessary to approximate
governmental neutrality and to ensure a "live and let live" world not only
for gays, but also for people like the good landlady Mrs. Smith).
3)School choice--designed to ensure that we none of our children are made a
captive audience for one side's view of marriage, family life and sexual
morality, and the source or sources of morality.
4)I'll even throw in repeal of sodomy laws in the spirit of live and let
This is a package deal--everything is in or everything is out. (Also, the
deal includes a guarantee of no amendments or partial repealers without the
consent of each Czar). Are Czar Andy and Czar Michael willing to go along?
