Subject: Re: LUNCH CLUBS
As I laid out in an amicus brief, the problem with the disclaimer 'of the
biblical view' is precisely that it assumes a reading of the BIble which
conflicts with evolution .THe difficulty is that this is at bottom a
religious
reading of the BIble-that of literal inerrancy. There are many faiths for
whom
such a reading is wrong(You should read the Catholic Church's doctrinal
statement on Biblical interpretation which takes direct aim at
inerrancy).By
insinuating that there is a conflict with the Biblical view ,the School
took a
position on a religious issue.
In the brief, incidentally,I proposed an alternative disclaimer which I
think
constitutional. It runs something along the lines of "many faiths reject
the
theory of evolution. The school takes no position one way or the other in
this
dispute. You may want to discuss these conflicts with your pastor.'
