Don't forget sports. My property taxes help support the largest public
high school in Indiana. It has won the state football championship two years
running (which earned it a commendation from the County Council). That's
because it's so big: proposals for a second high school in the district
always meet with complaints that the talent pool will be split. Its
principal is also an advocate of educational reform: the abolition of honors
and AP classes, which he says aren't "fair" because some kids can't get into
them. I vote against school bond issues, too.
Of course, I may be biased by being on the faculty of a university that
has de-emphasized football in recent years.
