Assuming the school allows student groups, say Campus Communists, to
solicit members through its mail system, what "problems" could the school
be avoiding by barring proselytization through its internal mail system?
In other words, once the school opens up its system to group recruiting
efforts, what possible basis could support excluding religious groups?
It's not enough to say that some people will be "offended," as many will
obviously be "offended" by a host of campus groups. In my view, this whole
affair cannot be explained except by hostility toward the type of
intellectual inquiry this group hoped to initiate. It's too bad
Dartmouth's administrators (and those of many other colleges and
universities) are so intimidated by Christianity that they won't even allow
their students to be exposed to it.
