Religious reason for refusing testimony

Prosecutors in the case of Amy Grossberg, a University of Delaware
student charged with murdering her newborn son in a motel room last year,
want to interview her parents. The parents are unwilling to be
interviewed, and the prosecutors have issued a subpoena. The Grossbergs
are maintaining that the Jewish religion forbids them from testifying
against their daughter, so compelling them to comply with the subpoena
would violate their free exercise rights. As a University of Delaware
professor who does research on First Amendment issues, I was intrigued by
the Grossbergs' response and wondered whether anyone on this list might
have a "take" on it.
