I think the most obvious explanation in post-Christian America for the
transformation from holydays to holidays is the need/desire to allow
observations of such days while, through the fiction of merely serving the
secular purpose of rest and recreation, avoiding perceived Establishment
Clause problems.
I have kids. We visit many playgrounds, searching for the perfect swing, the
best slides, etc. One of our favorite parks, a regional park here in
Northern Virginia, will be hosting a free event for children in which the
unhatched offspring of barnyard fowls, decorated with dies and stickers are
hidden and the children invited to search for same. I would call such an
event an "Easter Egg Hunt." The marquee at the entrance to the park
announces, "Spring Egg Hunt." Whoever came up with that idea needs
counselling.
