Good Friday cancellation

I note that Governor George Bush, who prides himself as being a guardian of
the public fisc, has, according to the relevant official of the University
of Texas, "signed a resolution that all state departments
> and agencies, except emergency services, be closed for a half day,
beginning at noon on Friday, March 28, 1997. As a result, The University
will close at noon to observe this holiday. There is no requirement to
maintain a skeleton crew."
Note the language about the the University closing in order "to observe this
holiday"? *What* holiday, I disingenously ask? Is there any conceivable
defense of the University "observing" Good Friday, instead of, say, closing
"in order to accommodate the many students who would otherwise be forced to
choose between their faith and their obligations to the University"?
