To expand on Perry Glanzer's point a bit.
For any scientific theory of how life began and evolved, it is
possible to maintain that life began and evolved in that way because
that is what God willed. For that matter, for any scientific theory
of anything, it is possible to maintain that the theory is true
because that is what God willed. For better or worse, however,
whether God caused, say, the second law of thermodynamics is not
within the realm of science. Hence, it seems fair that when teaching
science we say "here is what we know of material causes," and leave
questions of immaterial causes open.
