New NC bill on creation and evolution

Lately, while teaching the works of Spenser and Milton, I have been
reminded that there was another science/religion conflict before evolution.
In the early seventeenth century the conflict was between the Ptolomaic,
geo-centric description of the universe, which received the support of the
Bible and the Catholic Church, and the Copernican, helio-centric
description of the universe. I can imagine Parliament passing a law that
Copernicus' description was only a theory and could not be taught at Oxford
or Cambridge as fact. Now that I think of it, I guess the Pope did
something like that.
