Not being catholic I have no personal stake in the question, but I wonder
that you have omitted reference to persecution of catholics which has a hardy
and resistant history going back to colonial days, and which was often
vented, for example, in the nasty political cartoons of Nast, and in the "no
Irish need apply" signs at places of business employment throughout the
northeastern US during the middle and late 19th Century.
