If there were neither constitutional nor legislative protection of free
exercise (Smith plus RFRA declared unconstitutional), then my first take
is that the state would have become IN THEORY wholly idolatrous.  That
requires that I not be a citizen -- but I keep hoping I could then imagine
what post-Plessy-pre-Brown folks did, praying for the change of heart
needed to reinscribe soul in the U.S. polity.  While I am searching, if it
(God forbid) comes to that, I will include the friends of whom Abner
speaks, and I think that must change the outcome from anything I can
postulate in theory now.  Thanks for the reminded, Abner.
