I am looking for Local Counsel in Puerto Rico. Sometime this summer (trial
date not yet set) I will be defending several persons in federal court --
two Catholic priests, among others -- in a civil action. The plaintiffs
charge that the defendants violated RICO and the KKK Act by engaging in a
protest at an abortion clinic -- they did not block the clinic entrance.
The damages claim is 1.2 million dollars (treble damages under RICO would
bring it to 3.6 million) plus additional injunctive relief.
It will be a jury trial lasting from one to two weeks. If you know of
anyone available to act as Local Counsel, please let me know.
For those looking for an interesting discussion point, the First Circuit
heard this case and found that "women in general" are a protected class
under the KKK Act. In Bray v. Alexandria Women's Helath Center, 113 S. Ct.
753 (1993), the Supreme Court held that "women seeking an abortion" could
not be considered a protected class.
