Two weeks ago, a member of the Alabama Supreme Court,
which is hearing the case involving prayers and a 10
Commandments display in the courtroom of Judge Roy
Moore, sent a letter to the parties in the case asking if
they objected to the fact that he has a framed copy of
Micah 6:8 in calligraphy hanging in his office. (That
verse says, among other things, "what doth the Lord
require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to
walk humbly with thy God?"). According to our local
newspaper, the justice, Gorman Houston, said that "the
parties should know this in case they feel that this
may be a ground for recusal."
Lawyers for both the plaintiffs and the state were quoted
as saying they had no objection to the office display. A
spokesman for the Christian Family Association was
described as being "irritated" by the justice's memo and
was quoted as saying, "It appears he's trying to get out
of hearing the case."
