The Disaster Information Outreach Symposium is an event for and about information professionals meeting disaster information needs. The symposium will be March 29-30, 2011 at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in Bethesda, Maryland. Seats for this free event are going fast, so I would encourage you to register soon, at http://www.orise-registration.org/dimrc!
A preliminary schedule is available at http://disaster.nlm.nih.gov/dimrc/symposium2011agenda.html, with a list of speakers posted at http://disaster.nlm.nih.gov/dimrc/symposium2011speakers.html.
Presentations will feature research results, project reports, and personal experiences of librarians active in managing health information and other library resources to improve disaster outcomes. Librarians' actions in response to the H1N1 influenza outbreak, the Haiti earthquake, major U.S. hurricanes, and local emergency events will illustrate practical ways to be involved. Speakers will discuss the online resources, communications, social media, and NLM programs that support responders' abilities to make well-informed decisions and communicate health messages to the public.
There will be updates on the development of disaster information competencies and a new disaster information specialization being developed by the Medical Library Association.
Additionally, two new activities have been added to the afternoon after the symposium:
-Tour and video about the National Library of Medicine.
-Training class, "Roadmap to Disaster Health Resources and Tools", held at the National Library of Medicine. (While the class is currently full, we are accepting waitlist registrations and will consider providing a second class, if demand warrants it.) If you would like to participate in either of these free activities, please first register for the symposium, then contact Regina King at Regina.King at orau.org<mailto:Regina.King at orau.org> and state your preference for the tour or the class.
While at NLM, you may also wish to consider paying a visit to the new History of Medicine exhibit which will be on display in Building 38, titled, "Life and Limb: The Toll of the American Civil War."
The Disaster Information Outreach Symposium will be a great opportunity to network with like-minded information, disaster medicine, public health and emergency management professionals and learn more about disaster information outreach. It is co-sponsored by the National Library of Medicine (http://www.nlm.nih.gov ), the Medical Library Association (http://mlanet.org ), and the Special Libraries Association (http://www.sla.org ).
More information is available at http://disasterinfo.nlm.nih.gov/dimrc/symposium2011.html . For questions, please email the organizers at the NLM Disaster Information Management Research Center (http://disasterinfo.nlm.nih.gov), at tehip at teh.nlm.nih.gov<mailto:tehip at teh.nlm.nih.gov>.
