WHAT IS THE ENGLISH CONVERSATION PROGRAM (ECP)?
The English Conversation Program is an 8-week series of group sessions
designed to improve English conversation skills of non-native speakers of
English. UCLA international students and scholars, as well as their
dependents, may register for the program. Other benefits of ECP include
meeting people from other countries and sharing global Perspectives on world
events and cultures.
HOW DOES THE ENGLISH CONVERSATION PROGRAM WORK?
ECP offers small discussion groups of approximately 8 students per class
(with the exception of the "Advanced class" which will consist of up to 25
students) that allow for academic learning and personal attention.
Discussion groups are led by experienced teachers or ESL-trained
Classes are held once a week, for two-hour sessions.
There are three levels of classes being offered. Students are encouraged to
attend the first class of the level which they feel best suits them. If
after the first session, the student feels the class is too difficult or too
easy, they may switch to the other level by the end of the first week of
classes. Here are the basic descriptions of each level:
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: This class is for individuals who are already at a
functional level of English and want to practice their conversational skills
through in-depth discussions about social, cultural and international
issues. Classes will be small in order to give every student as much
practice as possible.
HIGH LEVEL: This class is for individuals who are already at an Advanced
level of English and want to further develop their conversational skills
through in-depth discussions of current events and social issues. Small
group discussions will be based on readings in magazine articles.
The Dashew International Center also offers informal discussion groups.
Discussion groups give students the opportunity to practice their speaking
skills by reading authentic language materials and participating in
discussions of contemporary cultural and social issues. Students will also
have the opportunity to discuss American culture, institutions and
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Through ECP discussion groups, participants will build fluency in their
English conversation skills, turning "passive knowledge" of the English
language (reading and listening skills) to "active knowledge," i.e. being
able to use the English language they have learned and to hold comfortable
conversations in English. The Dashew International Center provides the most
affordable English Conversation Program available to the community and
provides participants with many resources to facilitate the learning process
and make ECP both a successful and enjoyable experience.
CAN I ATTEND MORE THAN ONE CLASS PER WEEK?
Yes. We encourage you to enroll in as many ECP classes as you wish. The
more classes you attend, the faster you will gain results in improving your
English conversation skills. Each ECP instructor's teaching style is
different. Taking multiple classes and interacting with different
instructors and students will enhance your learning experience and improve
your English skills significantly faster.
HOW MUCH DOES THE PROGRAM COST?
ECP Registration Fee is as follows:
