This  team  program  presents  a  unique  and  exciting  opportunity  for
students  to 
experience  field  clinical work  first  hand  in  the  challenging  context
of  both  .outback. 
and urban areas.  
 
A letter of recommendation from this program will be a real asset for 
your  professional  school  application.   
 
You will  be  traveling  by  4X4.s, motorized  river 
canoes, horseback, bus, cab, and foot.

Financial Aid and Academic Credit Available 
 
Teams of ten to fourteen students are accompanied by professional medical
staff in addition to 
resident medical staff at each location.  
 
Each program begins with seminars on: 
Basic Triage      Tropical Medicine      Medical Spanish/Swahili 
 
Circumstances require teams be flexible, but usual rotating assignments for
students include:

 You.ll  be  trained  in  your  area  of  interest  to  provide  .house
clinics.,  in-home/on-farm  visits  to screen for primary problems and make
your pre-diagnosis, resulting in a referral from you to come to  a  village
clinic.   At  the  clinic,  you  will  participate,  under  professional
supervision,  in intake/exams/diagnosis/treatment plan and the prescribing
of the appropriate medications. 
 
Additional/Optional Areas of Study 
 
1.  Natural Medicine.  The history/use of natural medicines, their
collection, and classification also 
provides  an  opportunity  to  become  involved  with  local  growers  and
.curanderos.  or  .spiritual 
healers..   
 
2.  The Role of Myth, Legend, and Indigenous Beliefs in the Practice of
Medicine in the Two-Thirds 
World.  Medical/dental  practitioners  in  the .Developed World.  are  often
baffled  by  the  continued 
preference many local people give healing practices based on indigenous
beliefs. 
 
3.    Field  Veterinary Medicine.   Explore/study/experience  veterinary
practice  while  evaluating  the 
implications and importance of veterinary medicine for both animal and human
populations. 
 
4.  Medical/Dental/Vet Care Delivery Systems . a Comparison and Contrast.
Explore differences 
between our U.S. system of medical services delivery and the host country. 
 
5.  Medical Spanish (opt).  Beginning at any level of expertise, our staff
can systematically upgrade 
students. Spanish proficiency as relating to its use in the practice of
medicine. 
 
6.  The  Sky.s  the Limit!!  Using  the  expertise  and  extensive
resources  our  staff  can  make  available, 
create your own independent study with a sponsoring professor.  Notify ISL
