Dear all,
this is an historical question, passed on to me by Peter Hirschmann,
now happily retired, from the Head of the British Dental Association
Museum (see email below).
The British Dental Association is trying to find out more about a
painting that they are looking to acquire (see attachment). The
painting shows "the first dental radiographer" (actually a dentist) at
Guys Hospital London in 1913. One question from the BDA person was:
"I have been unable to identify the equipment purchased and used by
Guys to equip the new department so I also wondered whether you might
be able to help here."
My best guess was that the X-ray set was the General Electric Victor
CDX. Allowing for a bit of artistic licence and the colour, it looks
very like the photo on page 13 of the 2nd edition of Goaz & White.
If you have any thoughts, better suggestions or can confirm my guess,
please let me and Peter know. Also any comments on the paper, if you
have time.
thanks.

Dear Peter Hirschmann
I read with interest your paper in the Dental Historian about Frank
Harrison and his great contribution to X-rays in dentistry. I was
wondering if you would be able to help me. The BDA Museum is trying to
raise funds to acquire an important painting by Sir John Lavery. The
dentist depicted in the painting in the Conrad Achner. He was appointed
as the first dental radiographer at Guys Hospital in 1913 and in 1914
presented a paper to the 6th international dental congress in London
on X-ray observations on abscesses, cysts and root resections. Whilst
not the earliest reference to skiagrams I am presuming X-rays were
still very much in their infancy and that this paper is still quite
illuminating. Can you help me to identify the significance of this
paper ? if any? Were his observations accurate? I have been unable to
identify the equipment purchased and used by Guys to equip the new
department so I also wondered whether you might be able to help here.
I have attached an image of the painting and the paper. I am extremely
interested to hear your thoughts.
Rachel
