[Oradlist] CBCT training

Dear All:

First a correction:

I have been contacted by a swedish colleague with more insight in the regulations than me: 
In Sweden it is indeed the same legislations for all kinds of CBCT: I.e you need to be as specialist in DMFR or Radiology in order to be legally responsible for the use of CBCT-equipment and you also need to collaborate with a physicist regardless of the CBCT equipment is designed for large FOV maxillofacial imaging or small FOV dentoalveolar imaging only. This is regulated by the "Swedish Radiation Safety Authority"
What complicates things is that it isn't clearly regulated by the "National board of Health and Welfare" which competence or formal education is needed to read the images. This is of course unsatisfactory... 

Secondly: My apologies to Allan Farman. English is not my native language and I thought it would be clear to all readers of the list that I was referring to small FOV CBCT-equipment especially designed for dentoalveolar examinations (as opposed to large FOV maxillofacial examinations). Obviously I was wrong and I will do my utmost to be more concise in the future.

I am curious as to what is "intraoral CBCT"? All devices I know are
extraoral...

Dear Dr Ackermann,

The legislation in Sweden is a wee bit unclear.
In Sweden you need to be a specialist in DMFR or Medical radiology to
be legally responsible for a CBCT based business if you are doing
maxillofacial imaging. You must also collaborate with a medical
physicist. This means that a general dentist very well can own and run a
CBCT but then need to collaborate closely with both specialist and
physicist.
For a CBCT used solely for intraoral or dentoalveolar purposes it is
more unclear. As I interpret it any dentist can buy and use such
equipment. However, if they do a mistake, even a tiny one they are in
deep, deep trouble if they are sued for malpractice. This is because
their dental license isn't clearly restricted as long as they adhere to
good standard of care.

The specialist curriculum for DMFR in Sweden involves minimum 3 year
full-time programmed postgraduate studies - usually it takes a bit
longer. Dentists can enter the programme after minimum 2 years of
general practice. Most dentists entering the specialist training
programme have a long experience beforehand.

The legislation is currently under revision and we don't know the
outcome as yet.
Based on the European guidelines Prof Gröndahl and I have suggested
diploma courses in intraoral CBCT with demands on annual repetitive
education.
In my mind the curriculum of such a course need to involve not only
training in image interpretation but also knowledge of radiation
physics, radiation biology, dose-risk estimation, selection criteria and
diagnostic thinking.  I personally cannot see how this can be achieved
in less than a week.

Dear Oradlisters,

The EADMFR Basic Principles on the use of Cone Beam CT states that
adequate

theoretical and practical training is needed to have the right to use a
CBCT equipment.

My question is: How is it applied in your country? How long such a
training lasts (theoretical and practical), and what is the curriculum
for it?

Anyway, one can not go out to the traffic until having  a driver
license!
