[Oradlist] CBCT training

Hi Jackie: I have heard that Radiographic Technicians might be given the
right to read CBCT and ultrasound images of the head and neck region in
the UK. Is this correct? Surely these individuals are likely to have
less knowledge of the head and neck structures and implications of
imaging to dentistry than most basic dental practitioners. I would love
to hear your opinion on this matter. Would such Radiographers need to
take a special course in dentistry? AGF

Dear Dr Ackermann

We have had the same problem but have a solution (available soon) which
may be of interest to you:

The UK legislation also requires that people are 'adequately trained'
to perform any given radiographic examination, thus leaving us with a
similar problem. The British Society of Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology
joined forces with the Health Protection Agency (HPA) to tackle this and
other CBCT-related issues on installation, running and maintaining the
equipment, testing and QA, dose optimisation, compliance with the UK
legislation etc. The SEDENTEX CT project had an input into this report
(particularly on justification of CBCT imaging), and hopefully this
report will also have some input into the SEDENTEX CT project.

The report, which includes a section on recommendations for training of
staff requesting, justifying, performing and reporting on CBCT is about
to be published by the HPA in the UK. I will e-mail you the 'Training'
component as soon as it is given the go-ahead.

With kind regards

Subject: [Oradlist] CBCT training

Dear Oradlisters,

The EADMFR Basic Principles on the use of Cone Beam CT states that
adequate

theoretical and practical training is needed to have the right to use a
CBCT equipment.

My question is: How is it applied in your country? How long such a
training lasts (theoretical and practical), and what is the curriculum
for it?

Anyway, one can not go out to the traffic until having a driver
license!

Thank you for your help
