As we are planning for the new dental school building, discussions on purchasing new extra oral units are well underway. I am writing to get your input on using cone beam CT machines to acquire panoramic radiographs. Currently we have 2 traditional digital pan- ceph unit and an i-cat CBCT unit. One of the pan-ceph unit is old and may not make the move to the new building. So the question is whether to invest in a small/medium field of view machine with the capability of making panoramic radiographs or to get a traditional panoramic unit. With class size expected to increase and patient volume on the rise I am wondering what would be the best bet to handle the situation. We use MiPACS and currently i-CAT do not integrate with it.

If you could share your knowledge/ experience on taking panoramic images with any CBCT machines, please share the pros and cons of using it routinely for panoramic images and concerns about the radiation dose in such situations.

Please reply in my personal id skalathingal at mail.mcg.edu

Wish you all a great 2010.

Sincerely,
Sajitha Kalathingal
