I'm not sure if this is the one Axel is referring to, but it is from
1989 by Daffner entitled, "Visual illusions in the interpretation of the
radiographic image". Here's the link to the citation in PubMed:

You can download the .pdf from there, yourselves. Unfortunately, the
download is 31 MB, which I fear is probably too big to transmit via
e-mail, so I have not attached it to this e-mail.
Dr. Daffner has written another, shorter article on the topic, that
appeared in AJR in 1980 (Visual illusions in computed tomography:
phenomena related to Mach effect. AJR 1980; 134:261-264). I am able to
append this one as an attachment.
But I agree with Axel, the effect is a visual illusion and has nothing
to do with imaging modality.
Regards,
-Ernie.

Mach band has nothing to do with the imaging system, It is a lateral
inhibition effect in your eye/brain. I believe that Ernie Lam had found
an interesting paper on this a few years ago. Ernie?

Subject: [Oradlist] Cervical Burnout and Mach Band effect in IO digital
Radiographs
Hi Everybody,
We are in the process of embarking on a project on Cervical Burnout and
Mach Band effect in IntraOral digital Radiographs. Before we start we
thought of floating the idea on this forum. Does anybody have any
experience on this topic? Should Cervical Burnout and Mach Band efeect
be seen on IntraOral digital Radiographs, any explanations for your
views?
Cervical burnout being a anatomic phenomenon and Mach band effect a
optical illusion should remain unchanged be it analog or digital
radiograph- is our take.
Thanks
