Dear colleagues,
In the US the NCRP (http://www.ncrponline.org/) is starting a review of the
use of diagnostic reference levels (DRL) or reference values in medical and
dental radiography. The International Commission on Radiological Protection
(ICRP) recommends the use of DRLs as a practical tool in diagnostic
radiology and nuclear medicine to manage the radiation dose to patients from
imaging procedures. Achieving acceptable image quality and adequate
diagnostic information, consistent with the medical imaging task, is the
overriding clinical objective. The use of DRLs helps to manage the radiation
dose to patients so that the dose is commensurate with the clinical
objective. DRL value are usually expressed as Entrance Surface Dose in mGy.
I will be assisting the NCRP in this process with a particular interest in
dental diagnostic imaging. Certainly we will be interested in DRL for
periapical (bitewing), panoramic, and cephalometric imaging. At the present
it is unclear whether cone-beam imaging will be considered.
I¹m writing to see if any of you know of any documents issued by regulatory
or professional organizations that present diagnostic reference levels for
dental imaging. If so, I would be appreciative if you could contact me
directly.
Thanks for your help,
Stu
