Dear Oradlist Members,
For those of you who will be going to Baltimore for the IADR meeting, I
would like to highlight some of the Diagnostic Systems Group activities
that are on the program.
The DSG is co-sponsoring two symposia this year:
CURRENT CONCEPTS IN DIAGNOSTIC FORENSIC ODONTOLOGY will be held on Friday,
11 March 2005, beginning at 10:45 am. The speakers are DAVID SWEET who
will present "Forensic identification of victims of mass casualty
incidents--New challenges and approaches; EDDY DE VALCK who will cover
"The dentist as a member of the disaster victim identification team--The
Interpol DVI interdisciplinary philosophy"; and GUY WILLEMS who will discuss
"Facial reconstruction based on 3-D craniofacial reconstruction and in
vivo soft tissue depth registration." This symposium was organized by
Reinhilde Jacobs (DSG President-elect) and co-sponsored by the DSG and
the Oral Medicine and Pathology Group. When the symposium was proposed in
the summer of 2004, nobody would have predicted or conceived the enormity
of the recent Tsunami disaster that occurred in December. The presenter
are all international leaders in the field; indeed, Dr. De Valck spent two
weeks in Thailand a member of a DVI team.
THE OSTEOPOROSIS-ORAL HEALTH CONNECTION: FACT OR FICTION? will be held on
Saturday, 12 March 2005, beginning at 9:00 am. The speakers are RIVA
TOUGER-DECKER who will present "Nutrition and Osteoporosis: Risks and
Realities"; JEFFREY PAYNE who will cover "Periodontal Disease and
Osteoporosis: Are They Related?"; and STUART WHITE who will discuss
"Osteoporosis Detection in Dental Practice: Radiological Screening for
Osteoporosis." This symposium was organized by Riva Touger-Decker
(Nutrition Research Group President-elect) and co-sponsored by the DSG,
NRG, and the Periodontal Research Group. Osteoporosis is a common chronic
condition that affects millions of people and costs millions of dollar to
treat. The presenters are all world renown researchers who work in the
intersection of their respective disciplines and osteoporosis.
The DSG Program Chair, Charlie Streckfus, has organized the abstract
presentations into two oral and eight poster sessions. Check the IADR
meeting website (see below) for the schedule of presentations. I
especially want to encourage you to attend the poster presentation of the
DSG/Kodak Student Research Award winner VI NGUYEN who will present her
poster "Early Detection of Dental Caries Using Optical Coherence
Tomography" during the Thursday 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm poster session.

Immediately below the "search" box there is a listing "Browse by Program";
check out "DIA" (sixteenth from the top of the list) and "SYMP" (last on
the list) for more information about all DSG-related activities at the
meeting.
The DSG business meeting is scheduled for Friday, 11 March 2005, 5:15 -
6:00 PM in the Convention Center, Room 327. Please stop by and
participate (even if you are not a DSG member).
Regards,
Mel L. Kantor
DSG President
