CRDTS requirements

Hi Axel, I agree with you entirely. We have been going through the
same dilemma at Marquette. The explanation I got from a periodontist is
that they had originally decided to use a level of bone loss..either
percentage or even a perio classification to determine whether verticals
were needed or not but they then decided that it would become too
confusing and decided all BWs should be vertical. I will be happy to
sign on to your letter so we don't have to take unnecessary radiographs.
As an aside, I thought you might like to know that in spite of my
letters against the use of D-speed film for CRDTS a few years back, that
I have agreed to allow the students to use Ultra film for their BWs this
year as I really dislike F-speed film for the detection of interproximal
caries and E is no longer available. Lisa

Subject: CRDTS requirements
I am posting this on OradList so that it will be brought to the
attention of all radiologists in CRDTS area who may not be aware of this
CRDTS requirement. I apologize to those for whom this is just one more
piece of e-mail clutter. And for those whop wonder what this is, CRDTS
if the Central Regional Dental Testing Service, i.e. the regional board
that examines dental candidates for licensure in the midwest region of
the USA.
I have sent the following e-mail to CRDTS from me. If you agree, I would
suggest that you write a similar one.
Hello
I have just looked at page 38 of the 2003 Dental candidate's manual
(because it was brought to my attention by someone in radiology who
questioned it). I am troubled by the requirement to have vertical
bitewings. This seems to be prescriptive based upon a misconception of
what is required. Surely CRDTS is not suggesting that horizontal
bitewings that adequately portrayed the bone level and morphology at the
crest would not be acceptable. The current situation would dictate that
if a patient had a complete mouth series with horizontal bitewings, the
candidate would need to make additional radiographs for what would be
classified as an administrative rather than diagnostic reason. I am sure
that this is not what CRDTS intended. We make both types of bitewings on
patients, but not both on the same patient as a general rule. I would
not(and as radiation protection officer, professionally could not)
permit making a second set of bitewings for no diagnostic reason. Could
I please have a statement form CRDTS about this so that I can reassure
my students that they will not be penalized if they do not have vertical
bitewings if the horizontal ones are adequate?
Thank you.
Sincerely yours,
Axel Ruprecht
