Third molar cysts

But how would you differentiate between a cyst and a follicle on histological or clinical grounds? Both are lined by reduced enamel epithelium?

Dear Don and others. We did a study here in Glasgow examining the
histopathology of 222 follicles/cysts removed with impacted third molars.
We were wanting to discover the difference, size-wise, between large
follicles and dentigerous cysts. Measured (on a panoramic radiograph) at
the greatest depth less than 2.5mm was always a folicle, greater than this
there was the possibility/probability of it being a cyst, and greater than
10 (this is not surprising) was always a cyst; in addition asymmetrical
radioluncies were highly likely to be a cyst.
