Yes, perhaps I was confused about your original request. The paper I
referenced was concerning radiologically evident occlusal caries involving
dentin, under clinically apparently sound fissures. The point (which I
suspect you already well appreciate) is that twenty or thirty years ago, we
rarely, if ever, saw radiological evidence of occlusal caries without
obvious cavitation clinically. Now it seems that the use of fluoride
sometimes preserves the gross integrity of the fissures beyond penetration
into dentin.
