The Planmeca approach of altering both kVp and mAs for each
projection is theoretically correct.  If kVp steps were
small enough, it would be still better to alter kVp only.
For you newcomers, this (kVp change only) was Gordon
Fitzgerald's technique from many years ago.  He also used a
very long SSD.  The images he produced were outstanding!
Fundamentally, one alters exposure for the various
projections because of differences in thickness or density
of the structures that must be penetrated.  This is best
accomplished by modifying kVp.  The changes are so small,
generally <2 kVp for periapicals, as to introduce little or
no visible difference in image contrast, etc.
