Teaching on the web

Stan's point that the traditional exam is a poor method of student
evaluation is well taken. In our work we are teaching a technology.
Student performance can be effectively measured by several practical
means. However, for an introductory college course in chemistry, with
a large number of students, I cannot come up with a reasonable
alternative evaluation. In any event, no superiority of the
traditional classroom method of teaching is claimed. It does remain
an effective and efficient mechanism for information transfer. I
hardly see how anyone can argue with that.
