W. J. T. Mitchell is Gaylord Donnelley Distinguished Service Professor of English and Art History at the University of Chicago. Since 1978, he has been the editor of Critical Inquiry, the leading scholarly journal in the humanities. He is the author, among numerous works, of Picture Theory: Essays on Verbal and Visual Representation, The Last Dinosaur Book: the Life and Times of a Cultural Icon (Chicago, 1998), What Do Pictures Want?: the Lives and Loves of Images, and most recently, Cloning Terror: the War of Images, 9/11 to the Present.
