Please join us on Monday, May 9th at 5:00 in Humanities 348 at UCLA for an ECT Symposium with
Steven Mailloux,
President's Professor of Rhetoric at Loyola Marymount University and Professor of English at UC Irvine,
on
"Rhetoric Hermeneutics of the Subject: Politics, Spiritual Exercises, and the Aesthetics of Experience"
The talk will examine rhetorical hermeneutics and the theoretical problem of "experience" in Pragmatism and Foucault, moving from the experience of aesthetics to the aesthetics of experience via Kenneth Burke, Dewey and Rorty, then Foucault and Hadot, ending with a rhetorical reading of some Ignatian spiritual exercises. Along the way, the issue of the relation of politics to Foucault's aesthetics of existence and technologies of the self will be discussed. Three short readings are attached here.
