Abstract:

Dutch art in the 19th century defined itself in relation to the rich
legacy of 17th-century painting. The paper discusses the problem of a
national style in the context of 'art geography': a generally accepted
modern style could only develop within the parameters set by a dominant
older tradition. In the first half of the 19th century, the concept of
'Realism' had a limiting effect; after 1850, it legitimated new
departures. The focus is mainly on landscape and the experience of
nature.

Audience: Nineteenth-Century History, Art History, Cultural History,
Geography.

Biosketch:

Wessel E. Krul is professor of modern European cultural history at
Groningen University (Netherlands). He was trained in history and art
history at the universities of Utrecht and Groningen. His first work was
in the history of cultural theory: he wrote extensively on the historian
Johan Huizinga (1872-1945) and edited a three-volume publication of his
letters. Since then he has published widely on the history of art in
relation to national and cultural identity formation, and on the
conservation of historical monuments. He is on the editorial board of
several journals, and is also active as a translator and editor of
classic texts in aesthetics (Edmund Burke, G.E. Lessing).
