the co-evolution of humanism as a specific way of thinking about the
human condition and the humanities as a particular set of disciplinary
formations and practices that have been constituted through the birth
and growth of modern universities in the West. The speakers will address
topics such as the status of critiques of humanism arising from within
humanities; the discourse of human rights; and the role of the
cyber-revolution in challenging and renewing humanistic culture. Also of
interest in this series will be the question of the way globalization
has transformed academic conversations about both humanism as a form of
universal ethics and humanistic research as the mode of inquiry into the
human condition.
