Farewell to Weimar: Friedrich Hollaender's
Final Cabaret-Revues Before Exile
In 1931, popular composer Friedrich Hollaender opened the
Tingel-Tangel-Theater in Berlin. It was to be the place where he would
showcase the new form of cabaret he developed: the Cabaret-Revue.
Keeping the mixture of humor and social/political critique of regular
cabaret, it added a thematic and loose narrative structure to what
before had been a collection of disparate musical numbers. Hollaender,
best known for the music he wrote for the Marlene Dietrich film, Das
Blaue Engel, was only able to produce two of these Cabaret-Revues before
being forced into exile by the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party.
This Lecture-Performance will feature performances of and commentary on
a selection of works from these two rare Cabaret-Revues.
Lecture-Performance begins at 5:00pm, in Royce 314.
Award ceremony and reception to follow, in Royce 306.
