EMINENT WRITER LIDIA JORGE AT UCLA

  Lídia Jorge, award-winning Portuguese novelist, will give 
  the lecture, “Para um Destinatario Ignorado”/“For an 
  Unknown Reader,” Thursday October 21 at 4:00 p.m. in 314 
  Royce Hall, UCLA. The lecture will be in English. 

  Lídia Jorge is Portugal’s premier female writer. Born in 
  the Algarve region of Portugal in 1946 to a family of 
  farmers, she studied French literature in Lisbon and later 
  taught in Angola and Mozambique during the anti-colonial 
  wars in those countries. Currently a professor in Lisbon, 
  she has published eight novels and one collection of short 
  stories. Along with Nobel Prize winner José Saramago, Jorge 
  was awarded the City of Lisbon Prize. Her novels The 
  Painter of Birds and The Murmuring Coast have been 
  translated into English.

  Copies of Jorge’s book The Murmuring Coast will be on sale 
  at this event and the author will be available to sign 
  copies after the lecture.

  Lídia Jorge’s lecture at UCLA is co-sponsored by the 
  Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Department of 
  Comparative Literature.
