1. SURVEY: Fair Trade Action Research Team survey
This is the 2010-2011 Fair Trade Action Research Team's baseline survey, meant to establish an initial measure of student awareness regarding Fair Trade options at UCLA cafes. It's REALLY short (8 multiple choice questions + 1 optional short answer) so please take the time to quickly fill it out and pass it on to friends. We really appreciate it; thank you for your time!!
Link to survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FairTradeUCLA
The Action Research Teams (ART) program is a sub-division of the Education for Sustainable Living Program (ESLP). Through the Action Research Team component of the program, students form research teams to tackle issues of campus sustainability including energy efficiency, transportation, waste stream management, sustainable food practices and more.
PS. PLEASE FORWARD THIS SURVEY ON TO YOUR FRIENDS! :) Thank you! You'll be hearing back from us next quarter about educational campaigns/etc. Be excited.

2. VOLUNTEER: Santa Monica Baykeeper “Drainwatch” water quality monitoring program
Santa Monica Baykeeper is looking for students to become involved in our new DrainWatch water quality monitoring program.
DrainWatch Info Night and Volunteer Social
Santa Monica Baykeeper is recruiting volunteer interns to help us monitor and collect water quality samples from Santa Monica Bay watersheds including Ballona Creek and the Los Angeles River (yes, there is a river in LA).
We invite YOU to meet Baykeeper staff and current volunteers and learn about how you can become a CITIZEN MONITOR for our new DrainWatch program!
* Who: Anyone 18+ interested in improving water quality in our bays & streams
* When: Thursday, March 10, 6:30pm (presentation at 7:00pm)
* Where: Santa Monica Baykeeper HQ, 120 Broadway, Suite 105, Santa Monica
* What: Refreshments, presentation, socializing, and a call to action to reduce pollution through diligent monitoring of our beaches and rivers!
The DrainWatch program will train you in hands-on monitoring, data collection, water sampling techniques and lab skills needed to assess the damage caused by urban runoff and other contaminants. You will learn about the sources and ramifications of storm water pollution, the Clean Water Act, and how your efforts as a DrainWatch volunteer help to enforce and strengthen regulations. The DrainWatch program also helps educate citizens about the impact of urban runoff on our local beaches, rivers and coastal waters. This is a unique opportunity for students interested in environmental science, engineering, planning, watershed management, and public health to learn field techniques, gain lab experience and familiarity with discharge regulations and the TMDL process.
Santa Monica Baykeeper is a local, non-profit organization whose mission is to protect and restore the Santa Monica Bay, San Pedro Bay and adjacent waters through enforcement, fieldwork, and community action. To find out more about the Drain Watch program, internship opportunities or to RSVP<http://www.smbaykeeper.org/drainwatch.html> for this event, please contact Lara Meeker at lara at smbaykeeper.org<mailto:lara at smbaykeeper.org> or call at (310) 394-6162 ext. 101

8. LECTURE: Del Olmo, “The Role of Phenotypic Plasticity for Plant Invasion” March 8 @ Noon, 154 BSRB
DEL OLMO
Centro de Ciencias Medioambientales, Madrid
“The Role of Phenotypic Plasticity for Plant Invasion”
Abstract:
Plastic responses to spatial and temporal environmental variation strongly influence species distribution, with widespread species expected to have high phenotypic plasticity. Under this framework, phenotypic plasticity has been linked to plant invasiveness because presumably high plasticity facilitates colonization and rapid spreading over large and environmentally heterogeneous new areas. Here, I present a series of studies where I tested the importance of plasticity for invasiveness. By combining field data with common garden experiments I evaluated whether invasive species show higher plasticity compared to native/non-invasive species, whether plasticity pre-adapt an exotic species to invade a novel heterogeneous environment, or whether evolution of plasticity in an exotic species promotes invasiveness. My major conclusion is that invasive species do not show higher levels of plasticity compared to native/non-invasive species. However, the role of phenotypic plasticity and the debate question of why plasticity is not always maximal can be better understood when plasticity is related to other important features for plant performance such as trait mean values or phenotypic integration. Besides, plasticity does not always pre-adapt exotic species to invade heterogeneous habitats and its adaptive value depends of the main abiotic factor driving habitat filtering. Finally, plasticity should be better viewed as a dynamic rather than a conservative trait because evolution of plasticity can occur rapidly by genetic assimilation or Baldwin effect processes.
