1) VOLUNTEER: 100 Garden Challenge
Would you like to help us meet the challenge to plant 100 gardens in a single weekend? Does being involved in an event that promotes and creates healthy communities sound like a good idea to you? Do you believe everyone deserves a chance to benefit from one of the healthiest ways to spend time and get nutrition, and that gardening is a great way to get there?
The Westside Permaculture Group is now seeking volunteer gardeners of every skill level and age, plus other talent, for the Garden of Gratitude’s 100 Garden Challenge, a weekend long event on May 16 & 17 that will bring together hundreds of volunteer gardeners and community members to create 100 edible gardens in West Los Angeles. Here is how we are going about it:
1) This event is about Gratitude. We are celebrating life and community. Have fun and enjoy the weekend with your friends and neighbors. Thank the Earth, the Waters, the Sun, the Moon. Give thanks to each other for helping make such a beautiful event possible.
2) Experienced Garden Crew members are asked to lead a garden planting of 4-10 individuals. There will be workshops before the event for those who are interested in training to become a Garden Crew Leader. Please visit the resources section of the website for details: www.gardensofgratitude.org/resources.html.
3) All other members are asked to help where help needed: Sometimes soil needs to be transported or plants need to be watered, or maybe we need someone to break out their guitar and drums to inspire a little motivation for everyone. We can use it all!
4) We ask Garden Crew Members to bring food for potluck for the Gratitude Party after our work day. It’s a great way to share recipes and eat good food while hanging out with friends, both old and new. Please go to www.gardensofgratitude.org/joincrew.html or fill out the form on the next page today to register as a volunteer and you will be contacted.

2) CONFERENCE: 8th Annual UC, CSU, CCC Sustainability Conference
Early Bird Registration Expires May 18th for the:
8th Annual UC, CSU, CCC Sustainability Conference
Working Our Way to Zero
June 21st-24th, 2009
hosted at UCSB
http://sustainability.ucsb.edu/conference/
There are scholarships and volunteer positions available to help with the costs.
**Learn from staff, students, and faculty who have championed sustainability on their campuses.
**Network with key stakeholders across the state; last year 90 campuses sent representatives to attend the conference, including all 10 UC campuses, 21 of the 23 CSU campuses, 43 community colleges, and 16 private and out of state campuses.
**Experience a zero waste and zero net emissions event.
Topics of this year's conference will include: Energy, Food Systems, Green Building: New Construction and OMR, Health, Institutionalizing Sustainability and Climate Action Planning, Procurement, Waste Reduction and Recycling, Research and Curriculum, Social Equity, Student Affairs, Transportation, and Water
This year's keynote speaker will be Dave Newport, Director, Environmental Center, University of Colorado-Boulder: http://ecenter.colorado.edu/about_us/staff.html#dave.
There will be pre- and post-conference training on curriculum development, creating net-zero energy buildings, LEED CI, USGBC Workshops on LEED Project Costs and Returns and LEED OMR 2009, and a student convergence.
This year, we have added an extra emphasis to two of our goals for ensuring our conference is demonstrating the sustainable practices we are promoting:
*Keep the traditionally inexpensive conference fees as low as possible to maintain access to the event and to be responsible financial stewards during a critical budgetary climate. Help us achieve this goal by carpooling to the conference and utilizing on-campus housing at half the cost of local hotels.
*Become a model for engaging conference participants via web based technologies. Begin a discussion with us on Ning (http://www.ning.com/) by searching "UC, CSU, CCC Sustainability Conference," or look up our group on Facebook under "UC, CSU, CCC Annual Sustainability Conference". Webcasting and podcasting of select sessions will also be availale.
Register soon, as early bird discounts are only good through May 18th, 2009. Scholarships are also available, for more information, please refer to: http://sustainability.ucsb.edu/conference/volunteer.php
For any questions, please contact kmaynard at geog.ucsb.edu or call 805-893-2003.

3) FELLOWSHIP: Environmental Defense Fund Diversity Fellowship Program
Diversity Fellowship Program:
EDF is looking for diverse candidates who are seeking a professional experience in environmental advocacy.
The Diversity Fellowship is a full-time, one-year position focused on a project that is integral to one of EDF's key program areas – Oceans,
Ecosystems, Climate or Health. The Fellow will have the opportunity to work closely with our staff on a significant project, develop core
professional skills, understand our approach to environmental issues, and develop an understanding of environmental advocacy as a career path.
Environmental Defense Fund was founded in 1967 by a group of scientists concerned about the effects of DDT on humans, wildlife, and the
environment. DDT was banned in the U.S. as a result of our tactics—one of the classic achievements of the environmental movement. Other notable
victories include developing market-based systems to cut pollution, convincing corporations of the economic benefits of environmental
business practices, and helping private landowners restore more than 2 million acres of habitat for endangered species.
Environmental Defense Fund's accomplishments have been based on the combined efforts of scientists, economists, and attorneys working for
practical, economically sustainable solutions to environmental problems.
With the support of over 700,000 members, we focus our efforts in four broad program areas: Oceans, Ecosystems, Climate and Health. Offices are
located in New York, D.C., North Carolina, Texas, Colorado, Massachusetts, Arkansas and in San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles, California.
*Apply for a 2009 diversity fellowship*
To apply, please send the following items to Cheryl Pickard at

*Engaging African-American Fishermen in the South Atlantic/(DC// – Oceans)/:

The diversity fellow will research and write a report on this unique fishing population, identify and engage with community leaders, and educate state and federal policymakers about the problems and solutions facing African-American fishermen.
*Energy Efficiency in North Carolina's Historically Black Colleges and Universities**/ (Raleigh, NC – Climate)/:
The North Carolina legislature passed a bill requiring state buildings to increase their energy efficiency. The Climate team is working with historically black colleges and universities to identify, propose and implement renovations and new building designs that will serve as a framework to improve the energy efficiency of many HBCUs. The fellow will work with North Carolina Central University, Johnson C Smith University, and other universities as the program grows to develop a strategy to measure and record energy savings while developing a media campaign, securing funding sources and developing relevant curriculum to engage the student body in energy efficiency and prepare them for the new green economy.
*Restoration of the Mississippi River Deltaic Wetlands Surrounding New Orleans**/ (DC or NY – Land, Water & Wildlife)/:
Our work in Coastal Louisiana is seeking to protect is vital economy and its unique culture by restoring the Mississippi River Delta's ecosystem. The fellow will develop white papers on job-creation and economic development of wetlands restoration, collaborate with state and federal government officials and NGOs (The Nature Conservancy, National Audubon Society and National Wildlife Federation), and strategize with our policy teams on key legislators to engage.
