4) STUDENT OPPORTUNITY: CityLab at UCLA
CityLab at UCLA is a biotechnology and outreach initiative started in 1998 to increase biological science awareness and improve general science curriculum of disadvantaged LAUSD high school students. CityLab is run by UCLA graduate and undergraduate students. It provides a forum for UCLA students to serve as undergraduate teaching assistants, while learning effective teaching skills by instructing the high school students and executing lab exercises in a laboratory setting. UCLA students may be registered for credit or serve as volunteers.
Our goal is to introduce high school students in the Los Angeles area to the rapidly developing world of biotechnology though "hands on" laboratory experience. We expose high school students to inquiry-based learning, the scientific process, and critical thinking through different modules which cover topics such as sickle cell anemia, DNA fingerprinting, and epidemiology. We aim to foster an appreciation of and interest in scientific research, while educating students about different career options in science. UCLA students participate in the program as graduate or undergraduate assistants - teaching host high school students in a laboratory setting.
CityLab is a wonderful opportunity to gain teaching experience as well as do some community outreach. You will get a chance to make a difference in an underprivileged teenager's life by inspiring them to go to college and teach them something that they would have otherwise never learned from their high school science curriculum.
CityLab is an upper division class at UCLA (MCDB 192B). It provides 2 units of graded upper division science credit.
Spring orientation dates are:
-Tuesday Apr. 7th at 7pm in MS 4000A
-Thursday Apr. 9th at 7pm in MS 4000A
Applications will be given at orientations. A short minute interview, given on a first come first serve basis, will be held on the same day. Please note LS3 is a strict prerequisite.
Thank you for your time and see you at Orientation!

5) RESEARCH: Independent study credit or unpaid intern
Please see below for sustainability research opportunities on campus. If interested, contact Robert Gilbert directly and work out contract details with him. The deadline to submit 199 Contracts for spring is THIS FRIDAY APRIL 10TH! Your contract must be completed in MyUCLA no later than this Friday at 3 pm.
Four units of this Environment 199 research may be applied towards UD credit in the Environment Systems and Society minor UNLESS you are applying credit from ESLP towards the minor. You can not apply both Environ 199 and ESLP towards the minor.
Dear Students,
I have several projects that I am working on that would provide an opportunity to get some practical research skills related to sustainability (and it would really help me out!). These projects would require 10-12 hours of work a week filling 4 credit hours of ENV 199 or as an unpaid intern for Spring Quarter and/or Summer Quarter 2009.
These projects include:
Green Catering Menu -this would involve researching what food items have a larger environmental footprint and the determining which menu items we offer have the lowest impact.
Yearly Housing & Hospitality Sustainability Report -this would involve helping me develop metrics and collect data on factors we would like to track, such as electrical consumption per resident-day, % budget spend on "sustainable products and services", and % waste diversion.
LEED EB Certification feasibility - this would involved looking at what it would take to LEED EB certify Covel Commons. I need to know what points we potentially already can get as well as what we would need to do to reach a Certified, Silver or Gold level. I'd then need help gathering documentation and generating the reporting for the points.
I have some other projects too if there is a student more interested in writing, communication, or web stuff... I have a ton of articles that need to be written and co-curricular education projects that I am working on with ORL.
Generally, I am looking for someone with good writing skills (i.e. completed the writing 1&2 requirements), good internet research skills, and someone who is proficient with data analysis in excel. If you are interested please send me an email explaining your interests and a copy of your resume.
Thanks,
Robert Gilbert
