[EnviSci] Week 2 Announcements

Rian, Sigrid srian at ioe.ucla.edu
Tue Jan 15 10:35:30 PST 2008

Dear Students,

I know URSA accidentally has dropped some of you from your major/minor
during the break. Please check your status and make sure your major and
minor is reflected correctly, and let me know if you notice any
discrepancies.
If you are an Environmental Science major with junior or senior
standing, please make sure you declare your minor/concentration with me
and with the minor department if applicable.

Thank you to those of you who have already volunteered to help the IoE
during the Focus the Nation event, and to all of you who are
participating in other ways! We do need more people, our table will be
up from 10 am - 3 pm, and it would be great to have some help right
before and after as well. Ideally we'd like two people at the table
throughout the day, and so far we still need people 9.30-12, 1-3.30.
Please email me or put your name on the sign-up sheet at the front desk.

THANKS A LOT!

Sigrid

1) UCLA Orientation Counselor and Orientation Assistant positions.

UCLA Orientation has two positions available: One of our primary goals
has been to continue to have the Orientation staff represent a wide
range of majors, backgrounds and interests. We are looking for mature
individuals who possess strong interpersonal skills, a desire to work
with different populations, and a willingness to initiate students into
the academic and social environment here at UCLA. Previous tutoring
and/or counseling experience is helpful, but not required.

a) Orientation Counselor: Being an Orientation Counselor involves the
devotion of a significant amount of time and effort and a dedication to
your major; therefore, successful candidates must be willing to work
both in the Spring Quarter for training, as well as through the summer
while Orientation is in session. The Orientation Counselor positions
are paid, and the counselors will reside in a residence hall during the
summer.

b) Orientation Assistant: While also involved in counseling and advising
students, is primarily an administrative position, and students who hold
this position will work most hours in the Orientation office, as well as
present workshops and counsel family members during the Family
Orientation sessions.

Please see attached flyer to attend one of seven information meetings in
order to be eligible apply: "Orientation08"

2) Fair & Open Academic Environment Award Nomination

We are writing to invite your participation in the nomination process
for the UCLA Academic Senate 2008 Fair and Open Academic Environment
Award. The Fair and Open Academic Environment Award offers an excellent
opportunity to celebrate and reinforce the enormous contributions made
by those in our campus community who have aided in the furtherance of a
fair, open, and diverse academic environment.

The Committee on Diversity and Equal Opportunity will name three members
of the campus community (faculty, administrators, students, and/or
staff) to receive an award of approximately $2,000. Nominations may
come from, and are welcomed by, any member of the campus community.

Entries must be received by: Monday, March 31, 2008 by 5:00 p.m.

Information describing the purpose, eligibility, criteria, and
nomination instructions for this award are available on the Academic
Senate website at: http://www.senate.ucla.edu/awards/awardspage.htm.

We hope that you will give this invitation the careful consideration it
deserves. If you have any questions about this program or need
assistance in assembling your nomination, please contact Brandie
Henderson in the Academic Senate Office at x63802 or by e-mail at

3) Mike Wallace: Measuring and Monetizing Environmental Performance -
TODAY!

The UCLA Leaders in Sustainability Initiative presents Mike Wallace,
Vice President, North American Operations Trucost

Tuesday, January 15, 2008
4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.
Kinsey Pavilion 1200B (South Side of Knudsen Hall)

There's an increasing interest in corporate environmental performance.
One of the most influential stakeholder groups assessing corporate
performance are the owners of these corporations, the shareholders. As
interest and demand for data increases, so does the supply of data on
corporate performance. The challenge for shareholders and all other
stakeholders is how to interpret the data being released by
corporations. Mike Wallace will discuss some of the major global trends
in this area and share with us the unique and unprecedented research
being conducted by Trucost. Trucost is a London based environmental
research firm with quantified environmental performance data on over
4,000 of the world's largest corporations.
http://www.trucost.com/news.html

Mike Wallace, Trucost - Vice President, North American Operations has
over 15-years of environmental consulting experience. The first half of
his career focused on conducting environmental due diligence for
corporate mergers and acquisitions (M&A). He served as the M&A Program
Manager for Environmental Resources Management's (ERM) Western Region
and has conducted hundreds of facility inspections for multi-national
buy-side clients. In this capacity, Mr. Wallace assessed environmental
liabilities for US and international corporations and quantified
findings for use in deal negotiations. For the later half Mr. Wallace
has focused his due diligence expertise on the growing interest in
corporate environmental transparency and the nexus between environmental
performance and corporate governance. He has worked with numerous
Fortune 500 companies, government agencies and international NGOs. He
has authored numerous articles on corporate environmental performance,
has participated in international working groups on the subject and
speaks regularly on the topic of environmental transparency and
governance.

4) Joshua Zivin: Health Shocks and Natural Resource Management: Evidence
from Western Kenya

Joshua Zivin, Associate Professor, Columbia University Seminar in UCLA
Environmental Health Sciences, joint with Dept. of Health Services
Thursday, January 17, 2008 at 12 noon 33-105A CHS, UCLA

The impact of health shocks on natural resource management in developing
countries is not well understood. In this paper, we estimate the effect
of AIDS treatment on investment in soil quality as measured by
agricultural rotations of fallow land using a novel household dataset
from Kenya. Our results suggest that health shocks do, in fact, alter
the incentives to conserve natural resources by influencing the costs of
resources extraction as well as planning horizons. Smaller and older
households leave less land fallow as sick family members become
healthier due to effective treatment, while larger and younger
households leave more land fallow as they become healthier. Education
and property rights also impact the incentives to conserve.

Joshua Graff Zivin is Associate Professor of Economics in the Department
of Health Policy and Management and the School of International and
Public Affairs at Columbia University, where he serves as the Director
of the PhD Program in Sustainable Development. His research spans three
fields of economics - health, the environment, and international
development- frequently in their areas of overlap. He is currently
engaged in two large and distinct projects. The first makes use of
primary data collected over the past several years to examine the
economic impacts of the AIDS crisis in Africa. The second relies on a
unique, matched dataset to understand the role of institutions, social
networks, and financial incentives in the production of new scientific
knowledge within the life sciences.

Friends of the River is beginning the process of seeking a new Executive
Director.Please review the job description:
http://www.idealist.org/if/i/en/av/Job/254919-228

Here are some things you might want to know from Friends of the River:
With regard to our conservation agenda, were on a roll. In the past year
we had major victories increasing the number of rivers eligible for
protection in southern California, restoring flows to the north fork of
the American River for the first time in twenty years and advancing an
ecological approach to flood management. And the year ahead is packed
with opportunities. New legislation is taking shape to protect unique
rivers in the Eastern Sierra, in the San Jacinto Mountains near
Riverside, on the Central Coast and in the Sacramento Valley. This may
also be the year we see an historic agreement to tear down the Klamath
dams.

On the organizational front, we've just completed one of our most
successful ever fundraising in years (marking three years of substantial
income growth), our Board is strong and newly expanded, our staff is
excellent, and we're moving forward with a broad strategic plan.

Please be aware that the ED position can be based in either Sacramento
or the SF Bay Area and that the salary package is very competitive.

If you would like to explore this excellent chance to work with
wonderful people, doing great work and doing it well, please send a
resume and cover letter to dsearch at friendsoftheriver.org
