3. Summer Environmental Exchange (SEE) program at Lake Tahoe and Lake Baikal
The Tahoe-Baikal Institute is pleased once again to offer our Summer Environmental Exchange (SEE) program at Lake Tahoe and Lake Baikal from June to August 2008.
Each summer the SEE program brings together an international group of young environmental leaders to learn about and directly participate in watershed protection, sustainable economic development, and cross cultural exchange.
The 2008 exchange will mark the 18th consecutive SEE program. Many of our 300+ international "graduates" of the SEE and other TBI programs hold influential positions as natural resource managers, academics, NGO leaders, and stewards of international cooperation and understanding all over the world, including Lakes Tahoe and Baikal. For students or recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in natural resource management, international policy, or related fields, the SEE is a promising and rewarding summer opportunity!
Please see the website for more information: http://www.tahoebaikal.org/projects/exchange/

4. Environmental Science Colloquium Monday January 14th
UCLA Institute of the Environment - Environmental Science Colloquium
ASHLEY BOREN
Executive Director, Sustainable Conservation
Presenting a Lecture on:
Preventing the Introduction of Invasive Plants through the Horticultural Trade
Monday, January 14th
4:00pm
Refreshments at 3:30pm
La Kretz Hall 110
Over half of all invasive plants in California got their start in gardens and landscaping. Although most plants are not aggressive, a few species can - and do - jump the fence and move into natural areas where they crowd out native plants and animals. Controlling these wild populations costs taxpayers upwards of $92,000,000 per year.
Ashley Boren will talk about the threat of invasive plants in California wildlands and Sustainable Conservation's new voluntary effort with the horticultural industry to prevent their introduction. The organization manages a partnership of leaders from the nursery industry, environmental groups, academic experts, and government agencies to find effective, lasting solutions to the issue of invasive garden plants. She will share case studies of invasion sites, offer suggestions for alternative plant ideas, and discuss the progress of the collaborative approach to problem solving.

5. Focus the Nation UCLA - Volunteers wanted!
UCLA is participating in a nationwide teach-in event called Focus the Nation. It is a day dedicated to focused discussion about global warming solutions for the United States. It will be an all-day event on January 31st with presentations and panel discussions from UCLA administrators, faculty and government officials. Check out http://www.focusthenation.org for more information. For more regarding UCLA's involvement go to "News" at http://www.sustain.ucla.edu/news/focus_the_nation.php
At UCLA, the Focus the Nation event will include presentations by faculty, administrator, community members, and government officials; a business fair; round table discussion with student involvement; and a movie screening of "The 11th Hour".
In addition, workshops will take place in the afternoon with topics that include: green economy, green building, health effects of climate change, community responses to climate change, and the ecological effects of climate change.
In conjunction with over 1000 other campuses and institutions, UCLA's participation in the Focus the Nation event will help use our institutions expertise and resources to create a policy agenda on a national level. You can email questions to focusthenation at ucla.edu.
***Student volunteers***
The IoE will have a table at the event and it would be great to have some of our students there. This is scheduled for 10 am - 3 pm, if interested please let me know what time you can help out.
We are encouraging student participation and help at the workshops and World Café during the event, and it would be great if you can make sure announcements are made in your classes to promote the event.
The student organizers are looking into other sustainable ways to promote the event. Please contact Melissa or Kim if you are willing to help out and/or have ideas:
