publishing question

I have a question that isn't technically a constitutional law question, but since it relates to publishing in constitutional law I hope our moderator will permit me to ask it.  Here it is:
 
How much of a book project is an author permitted to preview as a series of articles in law reviews or other professional journals?  (Books and articles have different audiences, but book publishers need to make money and probably want "fresh" material.)
