Prior to the Burris appointment, or even with his appointment, it seems to
me that Blagojevich and Reid could have cooperated in finding a negotiated a
settlement to this conflict, that is, if both had the interests of the people
in Illinois in mind. The absolute position that no candidate chosen by
Blagojevich or even a candidate whom Blagojevich had any part in selecting is
acceptable is itself destined to prolong the controversy and deny Illinois full
representation in the Senate. There are some objective considerations
concerning a potential appointee's corruption index pertaining to his or her
appointment by the governor. However, corrupt the governor is doesn't mean his
appointee or Reid will be tainted or corrupted by working with the governor to end
the stalemate and then watch as he is impeached and convicted in the
Illinois legislature or incarcerated for violating various criminal laws. However,
corrupt Blagojevich is, there are possible resolutions of this conflict that
guarantee Illinois full representation in the Senate now.
