I don't think there's anything wrong with representation of communists,
and lawyers who did so could potentially be champions of free speech..
The same is true of representation of KKK members in some free speech
cases (e.g. in Brandenburg). On the other hand, actually being a
committed Communist Party or KKK member does indeed disqualify you from
being considered a free speech advocate. I leave aside cases where the
person in question had left the CPUSA or KKK and repudiated it, as Hugo
Black did, for example.
