Regarding my post earlier today, I just wanted to say two things: (1) I appreciate the feedback I received from many of you; and (2) I hope everyone realizes that the point of criticism is to lead to better knowledge. I think in the future we are going to see political science as a whole embrace a "big tent" theory of judging. I think that change is already under way. What was hegemonic in our field 5 or 10 years ago is in the process of being reconstituted.
One of the things that I need to make clear, however, is that Jeff Segal came to Penn State to give a talk last semester about his research on the nomination process. He seemed like a very good and decent person. He had a great presentation. The reason why I mention this is that, when I demonstrate that attitudinal modelers used a faulty technique to analyze their data, I do not in any way suggest that any of them did so with that specific intent in mind. Error is not deceit. We all know that analyzing the fit of a logit model is something that was a contested notion in the 1990s anyway. What we have here is empirical progress, not a detective story. All of us should be secure with whatever direction knowledge takes. Empirical protocol is an evolving craft, as is all knowledge. The process of pushing that evolution along is motivated much more by a commodity we all seek (truth) than the petty teams or camps someone might try to place us into.
What I hope for is that Jeff or Harold will look at my methodological claim and provide some public feedback. I think there is serious criticism on the table now of what attitudinal modelers have long considered their "big model." It would be nice to know whether or not this criticism is being taken as "disagreement in viewpoint" or "you have proved a bona fide mistake."
Regards.
